It’s almost party time in Manaus.
Tucked in the middle of the jungle, thousands of miles away from Brazil’s recognized nightlife capitals like Rio de Janeiro, Salvador da Bahia, and São Paulo, the Amazonian city of Manaus doesn’t exactly have a reputation for keeping the party going all night long. But that doesn’t mean the city is lacking in excitement, or options for diversion. In fact, the nightlife in Manaus is one of Brazil’s best kept secrets. Until now, that is.
Hot tropical nights by the river are de rigeur down near Praia da Ponta Negra, where raucous bars and nightspots pack in the young and restless of Manaus, dancing late into the night to all sorts of musical styles. But contrary to popular opinion, Brazilian and international rock isn’t just found in Rio. Further afield, All Night Pub (Avenida Efigênio Sales 2085) pours up live music along with the libations every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night in an upscale, high-energy environment. At Porão do Alemão (which translates to the German’s Basement in English; located at Estrada da Ponta Negra 1986 in São Jorge), bands from around Brazil and the globe rock the house Wednesday through Saturday nights.
If reggae is more your speed, head to Ao Mirante Reggae (Rua Padre Agostinho Caballero Martin 287), where several evenings each week, and particularly on Sundays, the tropical riddims and fruity cocktails accompany some of the most spectacular sunsets in the world. Unadulterated dancing keeps the crowd on their feet at Lappa (Rua Rio Mar 98), where live samba, forró, axé, and sertanejo (Brazilian country music) rattle the joint from Wednesday through Sunday nights.
Before diving into the city’s nightlife, consider taking a daytime Manaus City Sightseeing Tour to get a lay of the land. Then be sure to rest up in the late afternoon; you’ll be lacing up your dancing shoes after dinner.
